The Italian progressive rock band Sigmund Freud, formed in the summer of 1972, was inspired by the harmonious melodies and enchanted songs by their contemporaries. They played a number of live gigs for the next six years, and in 1975 recorded for two labels, RCA and EMI, but they were never able to get it all together to record an entire album. Fifty years later, through the encouragement of Black Widow Records, they were able to realize their dream after re-mastering and re-recording the music with a few tweaks here and there. Lots of vintage sounds — Hammond organ, MiniMoog, and Mellotron — contribute to one of the lushest and most gorgeous Italian prog albums I have ever heard. Risveglio rivals the best of Le Orme et. al. Sigmund Freud takes you on a wonderful musical journey that culminates with the exquisite “Freud 70s Medley.” Personal favorites on the album include “Giochi d’Ombre,” a very sweet song that will transport you back fifty years, and “Palla di Neve” that tells the story of those who suffer violence, and the oppression of the strong over the weak. The music is well composed, orchestrated, and lyrical. If you are a fan of complex and melodic music that is constantly changing from calm, bucolic moments to energetic flights of fancy, you will thoroughly enjoy Risveglio. Black Widow should be commended for bringing this project to fruition.
