Nirmata, the Sanskrit word for architect or creator, is the title of the latest Sendelica album. As both Pete Bingham and Colin Consterdine have had a rough year healthwise, Colin dealing with liver cancer and Pete dealing with issues from an enlarged heart, they felt that Nirmata was a fitting title for their latest project. As Pete states, “Out of adversity comes inspiration.” Colin had been traveling around Asia last year and started working remotely on musical ideas that developed into Nirmata. Assisted by Glenda Pescado (bass) and Lee Relfe (saxophone), the finishing touches were recorded in Cardigan. In addition special guests Calli (vocals), Kate Riaz (cello), and Shane Beck (“The Last American Poet,” trippy poetry recitation) completed the album. The six tracks range from four to ten minutes in duration. Nirmata opens with the awkwardly titled “Wish You a Good Health,” named after the Chinese English phrase from Pete’s talking blood pressure monitor that appears on the track. This is a slow mysterious instrumental followed by the title track. “Nirmata” features a steady beat and slow chord changes for a floating timeless instrumental that ends with Pete’s talking montior. Next is the hypnotic “Singled Out and Strangely Left in Limbo,” another instrumental unstuck in time with a 4/4 2 measure I-IV-V-I progression. “Blood One,” the longest track, follows with its repetitive dark atmospherics that tend to drag on a bit too long. “Save Your Breath” features wordless female vocals and mournful sax. And the album closes with “Peyote Sunrise,” which is dominated by samples of Shane Beck plus his recitation for a trippy vision quest. Nirmata may not exactly be the best Sendelica album, but it is a testament to Pete’s and Colin’s dedication to composing and performing music in the face of adversity.
