Satoko Fujii & Joe Fonda — Thread of Light
(Bandcamp FS Records, 2022, CD / DL)

Thread of Light is an example of how well the remote collaboration imposed by pandemic restrictions can work for artists. Satoko Fujii and Joe Fonda have worked together many times before, often freely improvising together, but this time they had to go a different route. During the months of lockdown, Fujii had been posting solo piano improvisations on her Bandcamp page; Fonda listened to them and felt he could add something of his own to the pieces. Of course, the piano parts had been conceived as stand-alone with no thought of anything more, but when Fonda contacted her, she sent along the audio files for him to do with as he would. From the results, his intuition was spot on, as these all sound great as duets. Fujii’s playing had enough space in it for Fonda to fit right in, blurring the lines between free improvisation and composition since Fonda knew in advance what was going to happen on the piano. For a bit of variety, Fonda contributes flute and cello on one track each. This kind of sequential improvisation has been done before by other artists in varying fashions, and there’s no reason anyone should question the validity of the technique. In any case, the resulting album is quite enjoyable, perhaps even better than it would have been if it were purely spontaneous.
