Procosmian Fannyfiddlers — Astonishing Tales of Cod and Plankton
(Bandcamp no#, 2021, DL)

Two years in the making, Norwegian “burlesque prog rockers” Procosmian Fannyfiddlers have finally released there eleventh studio album, Astonishing Tales of Cod and Plankton, a suitable title for a Fruits de Mer Release, but instead this new album is on LL Records. The band has now organically grown to an octet, adding trombone to their line-up. Still employing their mantra “too much can’t be enough,” the band presents eight new songs:  “Dental Breakdown,” “Lady Dung,” “Rage for Boredom,” “Frill,” “Jaundice Sailor,” “In Search of Competence,” “Still… You Turn Me Off,” and “Rimming the Ancient Mariner.” The Fannyfiddlers’ sound embodies influences from 70s prog, European and American folk music, swing, rock operetta, baroque romanticism, 60s pop, and a bit of a punk edge. I wish that the promo material had included the lyrics so I could better appreciate their commentary on life. Be that as it may, the songs are chock full of tasty Mellotron, violin (fiddle), organ, guitar, bass, percussion, and of course, trombone. Personal favorites include “Frill” with its flatulent trombone and heavy Fripp / Crimson vibe, “Rimming the Ancient Mariner” that starts out with medieval a cappella harmonies and transforms into a strong prog rock song, and “Jaundice Sailor” that presents sea gulls, Mellotron, wordless singing, and flute that grows over its five minutes to a rousing climax. Quite a  fun and impressive album!
