Pinhdar — A Sparkle on Dark Water
(Fruits de Mer Friends of the Fish 78, 2024, CD / LP / DL)

A Sparkle on Dark Water Cover art

In 2020 Cecilia Miradoli and Max Tarenzi recorded their first album, Parallel, in Milan, Italy. Parallel caught the attention of Keith Jones of Fruits de Mer Records and he released it on vinyl in 2021, a departure from the label’s typical psychedelia, prog rock, krautrock, acid-folk, spacerock, etc. catalog. In the summer of 2023, Pinhdar paused in Bristol on their way to the 19th Dream of Dr. Sardonicus Festival in Cardigan, Wales, where they completed the tracks of their new FdM album A Sparkle on the Dark Water. The new album is a set of ten darkly gothic dream-pop songs. In contrast to their debut, A Sparkle on the Dark Water finds Pinhdar firmly in the twilight realm between worlds. Dark guitar excursions, shimmering chords, bubbly synth arpeggios, and mournful vocals abound for an impressive listening experience that at times borders on the menacing. They takes you on a sonic journey from “In the Woods,” through a “Cold River,” to “Home,” with a “Little Light,” to witness “The Murders of a Dying God,” by “Humans” and “Solanin” using “Frozen Roses,” dropping them into “Abysses,” and ending “At the Gates of Dawn,” but without The Piper. If you are a fan of dreamy pop with a darker edge, by all means check out A Sparkle on the Dark Water.
