Here is a brand new Fruits de Mer LP that is quite a departure from the label’s love of all things psych, progressive, Krautrock, acid folk, and spacerock. Instead they just released Parallel, an LP by Italian art rock / trip-hop duo Pinhdar. What intrigued Keith Jones/FdM about Parallel was the involvement of Howie B, the Scottish musician, producer, and DJ who has worked with artists including Björk, U2, Tricky, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Soul II Soul, Robbie Robertson, Elisa, Mukul Deora, and The Gift. Cecilia Miradoli and Max Tarenzi, AKA Pinhdar, initially contacted their producer hero Howie B, not expecting an answer. But after listening to their tracks, Howie B was hooked and he offered not only to mix the tracks, but to also contribute creatively as the album’s producer. Pinhdar was thrilled and the result is fantastic! An LP of eight rock-solid songs that successfully merge dream pop, psych, prog, and Krautrock, clocking in at 35 minutes. Each track is a different side of the multi-faceted Pinhdar. There is an overall dark ethereal quality to the album that at times reminds me of Lydia Lunch or even Kate Bush. Some tracks are pure electronics and vocals, while others showcase Tarenzi’s electric guitar. And of course Howie B’s influence percolates throughout with various rhythmic textures. Though the vinyl release was delayed by the current vinyl shortage at the record plants, it was well worth the wait for those able to snag a copy before the vinyl out. However, you can still get the CD version or a download from their Bandcamp page.
