Peter Daltrey was the lead singer and chief songwriter for the 60s British psych rock bands Kaleidoscope and Fairfield Parlour. In addition, he has recorded and released fourteen solo albums from 1993 to the present. Running Through Chelsea is his thirteenth, accompanied by The Know Escape (aka Mark Mortimer), and is quite a surprising album. Peter is 76 years old and you would not have any inkling based on the music, as the album embodies the trippy experimentation of the late 60s and makes it just as relevant today, 60 years later. The album starts slow, but by the fourth track “The Circle” you are firmly engaged and not ready to let go after the album closes with the 45 second instrumental “Wisteria Mews.” In between is a mixture of baroque pop, psych pop, experimental studio trickery, gothic psych rock, and you-name-it inventive songs. Personal favorites include the aforementioned “The Circle,” “Time and Tide,” “Come Down from the Mountain,” “Elisa Jam,” “No Girls on Mars,” and “Bukowski’s Tambourine.” In addition to Daltrey and Mortimer, there is a variety of guest musicians that flesh out the songs with strings, piano, tablas, and a different ethnic instruments. If you are looking for something new and unexpected, Running Through Chelsea will be a great musical choice.
