Patrick Broguière — Mont Saint-Michel
(Mellow MMP 350, 1998, CD)

by Jerome Schmidt, Published 1999-04-01

Mont Saint-Michel Cover art

Borrowing from the famous Mont Saint-Michel legend, this third album under the name of this French electronicist is not at all a solo album but a real album group, with bass, guitars, vocalists, and some furious prog sounds. Myths and legends are combined in a clever way, with voices embodying symbolically some legendary beasts or characters (gargoyles, witches, etc.). But Broguière does not take the easy way to underline some stock legends with pompous progressive music. This is not a sterile concept album, but on the contrary a rather successful attempt to put into music some Celtic myths with a musical basis at the crossroads between neoclassical music and more progressive rock options. To accompany the listener in this musical journey, Broguière provides us with a very luxuous artwork made by an original artist and which tells us the story of the legend. What is also interesting in this project is the ability of Patrick Broguière to cross musical lines in a smooth and melodic way, to innovate his music. If you liked his first two albums, do not hesitate a second; if you are doubtful about Broguière’s capacity to provide some highly-melodic and progressive musical ground, give an ear to it.
