Nashville’s Palm Ghosts have just released their seventh album of 80s post punk New Wave inspired music. Whereas their previous, Lost Frequency, was a whimsical and nostalgic nod to the 80s, Post Preservation shows another side of Palm Ghosts. The ten new tracks contain a number of love songs, a hint of optimism as we come out of the pandemic, and the sense of a light in the distance. The songs are more upbeat and melodic, yet retaining that introspective ambiance of 80s synth pop. Echo and the Bunnymen and New Order figure prominently in their influence on Palm Ghosts. And now their a psych element with the introduction of jangle guitars on “She Lies Awake.” Their sound is so far from the country honky tonk / singer songwriter music you would expect from Nashville. Close your eyes and you would swear that Palm Ghosts is an obscure UK band from the Factory label. These new dream pop songs grow on you with repeated listenings. Palm Ghosts is unique today and well worth investigating for fans of 80s music.
