Palm Ghosts — Lost Frequency
(Bandcamp no#, 2021, CD / DL)

Lost Frequency Cover art

Located in the C&W world capital Nashville, Tennessee, there is a quartet weaving early cinematic dream pop, New Wave, and brooding post punk into something contemporary. Meet Palm Ghosts (Benjamin Douglas on guitar, keyboards, and vocals; Walt Epting on drums and percussion; Joseph Lekkas on vocals, bass, and keyboards; and Jason Springman on guitar, vocals, and keyboards). Embracing 80s bands like New Order, The Cure, David Bowie, and Peter Gabriel, Palm Ghosts have just released their sixth album, The Lost Frequency. Despite the three keyboardists, Palm Ghosts’ music relies more on guitar and bass rather than the synths that powered 80s New Wave. The promo material characterizes their music as “the sound of an 80s prom in a war zone.” Personally I would not go that far, but there is a definite dark gothic edge to their catchy music. Perhaps the martial rhythms on several songs communicates a “war zone.” The standout tracks are “In Monochrome,” “Young Empire,” and “La Petit Mort du Jour.” And there is even an interesting song about horror film impresario John Carpenter. Recommended for fans of 80s music.
