Ole Teigen — Aske og Jord
(Apollon Records AP086LP, 2021, CD / LP / DL)

Aske og Jord Cover art

Ole Teigen of the Norwegian psychedelic stoner doom trio Superlynx and other bands, reeling from the shock of his older brother, artist Karl Teigen, committing suicide, sought refuge in music. When you are faced with the unexpected passing of a loved one, you examine that relationship, the unresolved or unspoken differences, and wish you could right the unrightable wrong. Ole took several unfinished compositions and stitched them together into a cohesive and loving tribute to his brother, Aske og Jord or Ashes and Earth. Ole first performed these neo-classical compositions as a memorial exhibit featuring the art of both Karl and Ole, and the limited edition vinyl album contains one piece of art from each. The six compositions are primarily Ole on grand piano accompanied by Frode Berg (acoustic bass), Christian Svendsen (drums), Anita Anta (flute), and Monica Boron (viola and wordless vocals).  Across the six instrumentals, Ole reflects on his relationship with Karl from “Barndom” (Childhood), the title track, “Det uvisse” (The Unknown), “Magician in Despair,” “Den Tyngste Dagen” (The Heaviest Day), through to “Fugl” (Bird). Ole wanted life to continue, for the meaningless passing of Karl to have meaning, and that the pain he felt should be love. He conveys these emotions through his artistry, ranging from introspective passages to emotional melodies to a playful cabaret moment. Recommended for fans of neo-classical and minimal jazz.
