Oddplay — Heritage

Oddplay’s new album, Heritage, picks up from where their previous album, Soundscape (2020), left off, plus extends it a bit. Eleven new instrumentals spanning 44 minutes — just the right length to fully develop and not leave the listener bored. This time around Oddplay spends more time with stoner rock and metal than on Soundscape. Lots of reverb and heavy, dark, metal chords alternating with quiet passages, along with their signature surreal song titles: “Vices,” “Jam of Stones,” “Deboned Lamb Head,” “On the Surface,” “Thoughtless,” “Blindfolded,” “Borrow Our Time,” “Tainted Heritage,” “Lady Hawk,” “Organic Sense,” and “Quell.” Each instrumental has a different vibe, but clearly identifiable as Oddplay. Favorites include “Deboned Lamb Head” with its melodic guitar riffs, mid-Eastern vibe, and raw metal; “Borrow Our Tiime” with its gothic western, stoner rock riffs; and “Tainted Heritage” with its Black Sabbath power chords. This Bulgarian duo is maturing in their sound and compositions, and Heritage is quite an enjoyable listening experience.
