Oddplay is two Bulgarian guys, Itso Nikoloff and Alexander Enev, who love psychedelic stoner rock. They formed Oddplay in August 2019, writing and recording music in Alexander’s home studio. And to date they’ve released three albums: Wonderland (March 2020), Urban Shades (May 2020), and Soundscape (September 2020); quite prolific for a young band. Soundscape is a set of eleven instrumentals spanning 40 minutes, so obviously no extended jams, just fully developed ideas of the right duration that leave you thirsting for more. Oddplay is great, sometimes reminding me of Mugstar and Dead Flowers. Each tune has a unique vibe, be it buzzsaw gutsy guitar or distorted belt sander, dirge rock, simple grooves, shoe gazer, gothic Western, or melodic psych. In my opinion, the best track is the album closer, “Voyage,” with its melodic riff all wrapped up nicely in two minutes. The song titles are suitably psychedelic, especially “Sad Cat Eating Wet Bread.” Overall an excellent independent album worithy of notice and one sure to please all stoner rock fans.
