M'Z — Émancipés du Vide?
(Bandcamp Luminol, 2024, CD / DL)

Émancipés du Vide? Cover art

I first encountered Mathieu Torres and his M’Z project back in 2017 with his album Prisme. He’s released several albums since then, both as M’Z and under other names, but Emancipés du Vide? is the first of those I’ve heard. It consists of nine tracks of excellent instrumental music that floats around in between aspects of rock and jazz. Torres shines on guitar, as well as (I think) handling everything else — there’s some nice keyboard work, and the bass playing stands out on some of the tracks. The main thing Torres excels at is varying his tone and playing from track to track. He’s a skilled technician, but he doesn’t bombard listeners with endless flurries of notes. He gives us everything from twangy clean tones to fuzzy overdriven lines, with tasty use of reverb and other effects. I’d also like to call out his wide variety of synthesizer tones; you’ll hear some analog-style retro sounds along with more modern timbres, all chosen to fit the individual tracks. There’s not a weak track in the set, and the range of moods is sure to keep interest over repeated listens. ‘Nuff said — go check it out for yourself.
