Norwegian prog rockers Mythopoeic Mind have just released their second album, Hatchling. Their debut 2019 release was purely a studio project and band leader Steinar Børve (of Panzerpappa) wanted to establish Mythopoeic Mind as an actual band. They made plans for live performances in 2020, but the pandemic changed all that. So they took the material Børve had already composed for a second album and recorded Hatchling during the lockdown (June 2020 to March 2021). Their goal was to create a sound that was more spontaneous and organic then their debut, and they achieved that goal. Primarily an instrumental album, the five tracks feature intertwining melodies, counterpoint, and changing moods. Børve’s sax features prominently throughout, imbuing the music with a late-night urban vibe. Hatchling opens with “Fear Fiesta,” a cool, energetic RIO jam. “Winter of ’73” follows, evoking cold crystalline ice and snow that develops into a tasty and edgy dissonant prog jam. Next is the amorphous “Fog Vision” that slowly burns off to reveal some glorious prog jazz fusion. “Cottage of Lost Play” is a dark percussive excursion into Norwegian folklore. And the album closes with the excellent title track, which combines their laid-back urban prog with Gryphon-like medieval melodies. A very cool album indeed and well worth your attention.
