Moon Goose — Murmurations
(Fruits de Mer FOTF76, 2024, CD / DL)

Murmurations Cover art

A murmuration is a shape-shifting flock of thousands of starlings, also observed with herds and schools of fish, and is the natural result of the collective reasponse to a common danger.  Murmurations is also the title of Moon Goose’s fourth album, a collection of eight tracks that continually shift between Krautrock, space, psych, and prog music to ward off Moon Goose poachers in the quiet Welsh countryside. Throbbing bass lines, motorik rhythms, and bubbling synth sequences with a bit of Joy Division thrown in propel the Moon Goose murmuration through forty two minutes of primarily instrumental music, with the occasional spoken recitation. There is even a bit of surf music affecting the murmuration on “Compressed Hairstyles of the New Settlers.” I particularly enjoyed listening to the oddly titled and throbbing “Cloud of Eyeballs” and the album closer “Shisha Shanti,” a bucolic psych masterpiece that builds to a fantastic climax. Chock full of other strange track titles such as “Cheese Lens,” “Rhesus David,” and “Geese in a Dinghy,” Murmurations is another musical step forward for Moon Goose. And just like a murmuration of starlings, Moon Goose's new album is as fascinating to experience.
