Monsieur Thibault — Port-Cucu
(Dur et Doux no#, 2026, LP / DL)

Port-Cucu is an album that hits me in just the right spot. Monsieur Thibault is a band, not a person, and the four members have an infectious take on math-rock that includes healthy doses of melodic absurdity and playful energy. Some other French bands might come to mind, like Rien Faire, Irnini Mons, and Odessey & Oracle, but only in tangential flashes, and Cardiacs seem to be in the mix as well. But really, Monsieur Thibault is quite distinctive in their style. The origin of the group goes back to a musicians’ retreat in 2014, where Myriam Bovis (bass, vocals), Frédéric l’Homme (drums, keyboards, vocals), and Paul Delgrange (bass, vibraphone, vocals) met and collaborated on a piece they called “Monsieur Thibault.” That went so well they decided to form a band, and invited guitarist Paul Muszynski to join them and fill out the sound. Their first album came out in 2019 (you can check it out on Bandcamp — it’s well worth the time), and they released an EP in 2023; Port-Cucu is their second album-length release. It shows a band expanding their sound to take advantage of their multiple talents, as well as inviting guests on sax, strings, and trumpet for a few tracks. With all four singing, there’s sometimes a lot going on, and it’s clear that they’re having loads of fun with these songs that change meters, tempos, and moods frequently. Every one of the tracks on Port-Cucu is great in a different way, whether it’s got a tricky bass part or a goofy vocal bit or a whistled melody. This is another worthy entry into the growing list of excellent French bands.
