Mark Jenkins — Space Dreams 2
(AMP Records AMP-CD 030, 1996, CD)
by Peter Thelen, Published 1997-10-01
Mark Jenkins is a solo electronic artist based in the UK. Having not heard Space Dreams, it will be difficult to relay how the sequel compares to the original, but in its essence, Space Dreams 2 spans two poles of electronic compositions: a heavily sequenced, bouncy electronic pop style full of brightly colored melodies and shimmering effects that might remind of Tangerine Dream's Optical Race or Underwater Sunlight period. The other material is more moody and introspective, floating, almost ambient at times. The overall theme is space exploration, with anecdotes and photos for each of the ten tracks in the booklet, and titles like "Gravity Waves," "Ice Planet," and "Pulsarsphere." After a fairly cheezy opening track, "Supernova," things begin to improve rapidly, and by track three ("Neptune Storm") we are in some interesting, albeit still very sequenced territory. "Ancient Light," "Rock 84001," and "Earth Is My Home" represent the best of the album's more 'spacy' side. Overall, this is one that I really need to be in the mood for, although I know many who would totally flip over it (John Szpara, are you reading this?). At any rate, if the description and comparisons sound like something you'd be interested in, then it's probably one you'll enjoy.
