Triangolazioni is a project led by Italian guitarist and composer Luciano Margorani (of Homunculus Res and La 1919, among others), something that began back in early 2012 when Margorani asked drummer Chris Cutler (of Henry Cow and countless others) to record six rhythmic tracks on his own as if they were finished pieces, following only his own inspiration. Later, Margorani gave some specific additional guidance as to what he was looking for on each of the six tracks. Cutler recorded his six drum tracks and mixed them. Margorani asked his bassist Luca Pissavini to record some improvised bass parts, but it didn’t work out so well because Cutler’s drum tracks were composed pieces intended for songs, not improvisations, so those drum tracks sat unused until 2024, when Margorani asked his friend, singer and multi-instrumentalist Dario d'Alessandro, to lend a hand in composing pieces around these drum tracks, also adding vocals, and although the result was completely different that what Margorani had envisioned back in 2012, the result was satisfactory to all involved and resulted in these recordings released in late 2025. Margorani played bass and guitars, while d’Alessandro sang the voice parts and played keyboards, guitars, and glockenspiel. While this back story sounds like a confusing way for a set of tunes to come together, the result is quite pleasing to the ear; the vocals lend a bit of a Canterbury flavor, while the instrumental parts tend to be explorative, even though for most of the pieces the drums are more or less straightforward song-oriented rock tracks, or at least they start that way and progressively become more interesting as the album proceeds forward. The final two tracks, the near-fourteen-minute “Nubendi Traditi” and set closer “Terra Santa,” are by far the most interesting and explorative of the bunch. There’s a lot here to like, and kudos to Mr. Margorani for finally following through on the project.
