Lamp of the Universe — The Akashic Field

The Akashic Field Cover art

Even though Craig Williamson, AKA Lamp of the Universe, has been steadily releasing music over the years, it has been seven years since I heard his music and reviewed The Inner Light of Revelation. In between he has released Hidden Knowledge, a split LP with Kanoi, Align in the Fourth Dimension, and Dead Shrine. The Akashic Field is his sixteenth album since 2001 of acid folk / psychedelic rock / stoner rock. To put a little context around this new release, the Akashic Field is an occult philosophical theory that seeks to unite everything. Mystics and sages maintain that an interconnecting cosmic field exists at the roots of reality that conserves and conveys information, a field known as the Akashic Record. This theory’s greatest proponent was Edgar Cayce, who believed that the Akashic Records contained a history of every soul since the dawn of creation. The Akashic Field holds the record of all that has happened in life on Earth, the entire cosmos, and what has yet to happen. Lamp of the Universe attempts to convey this belief through eight trippy tracks: “Return as Light,” “Emerald Sands,” Minds of Love,” “Seventh Seal,” “Descendants,” “Re-Ascension,” “Mystic Circle,” and “The Messianic Rule.” Mixing stoner rock, drones, electronics, keyboards, effects, and raga rock, Williamson creates a unique blend of raw visceral shamanic music. For me, the high point of the album is “Mystic Circle” where Williamson cleverly inserts a sitar into his trance-inducing mix. This album is perfect for all fans of stoner rock, raga rock, and psychedelia.
