The London duo of Joanna Beck (vocals and bass) and Ian de Silva (guitars and piano), AKA La Nouvelle Musique, is a new band to join the Fruits de Mer Records roster. As their initial foray into vinyl, La Nouvelle Musique and Fruits de Mer released a 7-inch lathe-cut with two tracks: “Time Ticks Slowly” and “Water to Wine.” Both tracks are primarily acoustic, with “Time Ticks Slowly” making me think of Nick Drake as Joanna’s beautiful, moody, and introspective voice relates how ten minutes can seem like an hour or just a matter of seconds. “Water to Wine” is mournful instrumental with fiddle and acoustic guitar. They wrote this track after watching Jim Jarmusch’s film Down by Law as an imaginary music for the closing credits. Recorded and produced at Berwick Street Studios in Soho, London (which is where Ultravox recorded “Vienna” and The Sex Pistols recorded their version of “My Way”), there is a clear purity to La Nouvelle Musique. Limited to 95 copies, the lathe-cut is sold out, but the tracks are now appearing on FdM compilations. In addition, according to La Nouvelle Musique’s web site, they are releasing a full length album on Fruits de Mer later this year, so a wider audience can experience the musical beauty of La Nouvelle Musique.
