La Nouvelle Musique’s self-titled album is their follow-up to their debut lathe-cut Time Ticks Slowly on Fruits de Mer earlier this year. The London-based duo of Joanna Beck (vocals and bass) and Ian de Sylva (guitar) have produced an album of ten originals plus a cover of Sandy Denny’s “Crazy Lady Blues.” The songs are a mixture of Joanna’s ethereal vocals, acoustic guitar, acid folk, prog rock, keyboards, and exquisite vocal harmonies. She is a composer and performance artist who also creates electroacoustic music, sonic art, and scores. Ian has played with various bands on Rough Trade Records and The Medicine Label. Together they are a self-contained unit, writing, recording, and producing their music. At times their music reminds me of Sandy Denny and Judy Dyble, but there is also a cinematic psychedelic element mixed in to produce some gorgeous and majestic songs. I find it difficult to single out specific tracks — the entire album is excellent ranging from hypnotic acid folk to soaring rock passages. And if you missed grabbing a copy of their lathe-cut, “Time Ticks Slowly” also appears on this new album. La Nouvelle Musique produces music with a rare beauty that raises them above their contemporaries. This self-titled album is one you do not want to miss.
