Kryuhm is an Italian doom metal band formed in 1999 with Daniele Laurenti (vocals and guitar), Daniele Sinico (bass), and Fiorenzo Brusaferro (drums), inspired by Black Sabbath. They recorded a demo cassette in 2000 and then Sinico left the band in 2004, which put them on hiatus unitl 2009 when Rossella Berton joined. They played at a number of Italian festivals and again halted again until 2021 when they recorded their first album Only in My Mind. Fast forward another four years and Kryuhm has released their second full length album of dark doom metal, Demoni. The first mystery to solve is how do you pronounce Kryuhm? Kree-Uhm? Cry-Uhm? Who knows? There is no insight on the internet. Today the band lineup is Laurenti with Andrea Fracca (guitar), Francesco Sterzi (bass), Tino Fracca (drums), and Giampi Tomezzoli (keyboards). They are also joined by several guests:  Vittorio Sabelli, Claudio Cesari, G.B. Malachina, Flavio Domenico Porrati, Sandra Silver, Mauro Tollini, Massimo Malachina, Luca Lucchini, John Goldfinch, David Krieg, Samael von Martin, Antonio Polidori, and Mario di Donato. Demoni consists of nine tracks ranging in length from one to eight minutes. The two shortest tracks, “Ogni Verbo e Diceria” and “Silente,” are narrations in Italian with minimal instrumentation. The other songs are a mix of English and Italian lyrics with wailing vocals reminiscent of Ozzy and Black Sabbath, accompanied by ponderous heavy guitar chords and thundering bass. Then there are some surprising interludes like the soprano sax solo on “La Casa tra i rovi,” the quiet piano and whispered vocals on “Welcome to My Hell,” and the edgy female narrator — think Diamanda Galas or Lydia Lunch — with the delicate piano and cathedral organ on the bonus track “Samhain.” Demoni is definitely for fans of 70s dark doom Italian prog with a heavy dose of Black Sabbath.
