Released separately, it is hard to imagine any Schulze aficionado wanting to be without either of these discs, the result of his performance in June 2001 at the KlangArt Festival in Osnabrück in northwestern Germany. The themes and sounds from this set are fine accompaniment and a natural extension of last year’s stunning 10-CD set Contemporary Works Vol. 1. Synthesizers and drums dominate the long, winding pieces on disc one. Moving from the active “Breeze to Sequence,” “Loops to Groove” falls into a much more laid-back style. Both passages feature excellent rhythms, but in very different ways. An oboe synth lead is beautifully done. Light, groovy keys flitter about toward the end, as it moves into “From Church to Search.” Female, then male Gregorian chants, apparently lend themselves to the spiritual moniker. Here, Schulze perfectly blends retro and modern elements with apparent ease, ending in dramatic choral fashion. Disc two features long-time collaborator Wolfgang Tiepold on cello. Whereas disc one has long, mid-tempo grooves, disc two is filled with wondrous highs and lows, as evidenced on “Cavellaeria Cellisticana,” which is split into a soft, melancholic part and a brisk, hypnotic part. “Tracks of Desire” is quietly elegant and sad, blurring the lines as he often does between electronic and classical music. This is Klaus Schulze at his best.
