Jon Jenkins — Flow
(Spotted Peccary SPM-D0402, 1998, CD)
by Peter Thelen, Published 1999-04-15
While Jenkins has had a major hand in the production of most releases on Spotted Peccary, the last time his name appeared on the front of a disc was Continuum, his exceptional 1995 collaboration with Paul Lackey. While that was a very lush and brightly colored melodic work of densely layered synth tones, his latest work operates in an area closer to the ambient territory of labelmate Mark Rownd, offering lush textures and intentionally understated melodics flowing within warm dreamlike vignettes, occasionally peppered with percussives. For comparisons, the overall result might fall somewhere midway between recent Roach/Obmana collaborations and some of the mid-80s work by Lanz & Speer (Desert Vision for example), yet Jenkins brings a warmth and layered sonic density that goes well beyond what one might expect from these comparisons. The eleven tracks cycle between more dreamy ambient pieces (like “Breathing in the Deep") and those with more percussive definition like “The Power / Washed Away” or “Warrior’s Last Stand.” Definitely one of the best ambient releases of 1998.
