Jeff Parkhurst — Dark and Deep
(Green Monkey GR1111, 2024, LP / DL)

Dark and Deep Cover art

Jeff Parkhurst is primarily a drummer, but on his solo debut he plays piano, synthesizers, guitar, and bass, as well as singing and handling drums and percussion. He’s aided here and there throughout the nine tracks by a number of others on vocals and various instruments. The songs have beginnings stretching back more than a decade, with bits recorded at various locations. Stylistically, it’s quite varied as well, kicking off with the beat poetry and funk of “Freewheelin’ Souls” and moving into “GTO,” which has the feeling of an early track by Elton John or Billy Joel, with a hint of Chicago’s “Saturday in the Park” sans the horns. “Sister Julianne” is another bouncy piano song with some great backing vocals. Other songs turn darker, like the melancholy “Turn Me Out” or the moody “Something Larger.” On “Another Portrait” there is lovely backing from flutes and strings, and then “Forget This Craziness” has an ominous fuzz bass and atmospheric percussion. Elsewhere you’ll hear accordion, and the overall impression is of a songwriter reaching out in different directions, putting a unique spin on styles that might not normally coexist.
