Jeff Aug — Before Then After
(Corrosive Media Corp CM001, 1998, CD)

by Peter Thelen, Published 2000-10-01

Before Then After Cover art

Jeff Aug’s vision here is that of the solo electric guitar instrumentalist, aided by reverb, fuzz distortion, phase shifting, flanging, delays, and various other effects, rendering a full length CD of furious psychedelic guitar work, with enough skill and variety to keep the proceedings airborne for the duration. Working essentially as a one-man band live in real time, this writer was reminded at times of both the earliest work of Steve Tibbetts, and the Egg period LPs of French guitarist Alain Markusfeld, but in fact Aug’s material seems far less fleshed out conceptually, though still very enjoyable. The disc is a long one, though, fifteen tracks across 70 minutes — and while it remains interesting throughout, it’s sometimes a bit more than this listener can consume in one sitting. Especially nice when he tones down the effects a bit, as on “Rebecca,” and gives a solid performance displaying his chops uncluttered by distortion; these breaks from the onslaught of effects break the album up nicely. All taken though, this is a fine disc that should be of interest to guitar freaks and those into guitar-driven psychedelia.
