Jarguna & Chris Russell — Wind of Dissonance
(Projekt No #, 2026, DL)

Wind of Dissonance Cover art

Several years ago composers Jarguna (Marco Billi) and Chris Russell joined forces for their first collaborative release Transmissions from Serpent Mound. Since both artists do much of their work in ambient music realms, it seemed like a perfect match, and so it was. In the years since both artists have been busy with their respective solo work and other collaborations, but the duo seemed destined to get back together sooner or later and build upon what they had already started. Wind of Dissonance is the long awaited follow-up that opens the next chapter in their musical partnership. The album is comprised of thirteen discrete tracks, all purely instrumental, each built of textured layers, drones, organic soundscapes, and mysterious complimentary sonic artifacts that follow, dreamlike, into a giant atmospheric cauldron of sound where  listeners can completely immerse themselves while the two protagonists explore freely and create new environments all around. While the sources of sound hold their secrets, one can often hear synths, stringed instruments, bell-like percussion, and perhaps field recordings, with everything heavily processed, though the end result is mostly free-floating, illustrating the subtleties within the sounds themselves, rather than something that follows meter and melodic considerations, although those are present to a lesser degree in a fragmentary way. On the track “Room Discord,” for example, the piece is highlighted by curious percussive elements that sound a bit like metal springs, while expansive synth chordal elements float in and out of the background, pulling the listener in. The heavily processed sounds one hears on “Zephyr Flow” are a mystery to the core, a dense floating unknown, but nonetheless majestic and beautiful, while the title track wraps the listener in a rich blanket of warmth, dreamy and cryptic, as the listener passes through a soundfield on all sides. No two tracks are the same — not even close — and there is a lot here to absorb; open-minded explorers will surely find plenty herein to pique their interest.
