Estonian band In Spe are most well known for Typewriter Concerto in D, but that might change with this reissue. Although lacking in the gimmickry of that other release, this album (also known as Antidolorosum) is a worthy execution of a light symphonic style. All of the compositions have been written by multi-instrumentalist Erkki-Sven Tüür, and feature ample work on flute, soprano and tenor recorder, as well as several band members alternating on various keyboards. The result is in the symphonic vein but with some ethnic / folk overtones. The juxtaposition of these simpler, beautiful moments with some heavier guitar-based rock-outs (including a nice section in 13 during “The Sunboat”) enhance the effectiveness of both individual aspects. Although vocals are almost nowhere to be found on this album, I am still reminded of folkier Italian outfits such as Errata Corrige, although I would consider this superior due to the greater stylistic variety. There sole vocal track, “Antidolorosum,” is in a more conventional style and perhaps doesn’t hold up quite as well. Much more satisfying is the drive towards a sense of minimalist ethereality during the final track, “The Fight of the Spheres.” Never overly aggressive, In Spe succeeds instead with charm, by being enthralling instead of overpowering. A delight in most respects; almost a must-own, really.
