Il Balletto di Bronzo — Trys
(Mellow MMP 367, 1997, CD)

Recorded in 1996 at an Italian progressive rock festival, Trys marks the return of the legendary Il Balletto di Bronzo. Well, almost. You see, BDB are now a keyboard trio led by original member, leader, and composer Gianni Leone, rather than what appeared to be a quartet on their original albums. Their 1972 album Ys is on a pedestal, not only for the great keys and vocals, but also for the blistering guitar work. Live in 1996, a lot of the depth is missing, due to the lack of instrumentation, and, yes, it hurts a little without the guitar. Putting all that aside, Trys is still a tremendous live set. Besides an entire version of Ys, of which you will be surprised how good of a version this is despite the missing instrumentation, included is music from a BDB single, previously unreleased songs, and material from Gianni Leone's post-BDB Leo Nero solo albums. The focus is definitely on Leone's keys and voice and he doesn't disappoint, pulling off both simultaneously with unbelievable skill. It all adds up to a live set that lives in the shadow of its former self, yet is completely enjoyable nonetheless.
