Hyper Gal — Our Hyper
(Skin Graft GR169, 2026, CD / DL)

Our Hyper Cover art

Does it make sense that an experimental noise rock band would have a track called “Tinnitus”? Hyper Gal is back already with their third release on Skin Graft, titled Our Hyper, and it follows in the footsteps of Pure (2021) and After Image (2024) with eight blasts of drum / synth / vocal madness that rarely let up. Kurumi Kadoya (drums and synths) and Koharu Ishida (vocals) continue to refine their sound without straying too far from their core of simple overdriven drums, vocals that range between spoken and shouted, and buzzy synthesizers that carry more rhythmic content than melodic or harmonic. While it would be unfair to call any of Our Hyper mellow, we do get “Hazy,” which is built of a wobbly distorted drone, erratic synth notes that don’t quite qualify as arpeggios, long sweeps of high notes, and a plodding drum beat; this works into a more insistent section with breathy vocals, followed by a climax where it all ramps up to near normal (for them) intensity. “I Said, You Said,” starts out almost like an EDM track, but its refusal to break into anything like a hook turns it into something else — its “chorus” section just adds extra drums and more distortion on the voice. I’m not in the mood for music this noisy and hyperactive every day, but when I am, I can rely on Hyper Gal to deliver the goods.
