So I’m just gonna come out and say it: If you like Primus and want more of (nearly) the same, Hog Meets Frog has got you covered. On their latest EP, this Austrian band presents offbeat funk-metal with semi-spoken vocals that tell absurd stories about weird characters. There are all sorts of slap-happy bass parts you could imagine Les Claypool coming up with, insanely busy and leading the band. That’s Peter Schwabl on the bass, and he handles the “storytelling” vocals as well. The guitar, which is generally more prominent than in Primus, is by Ariyan Rezaei Jahromi if their Bandcamp page is to be believed. He’s got what might be called an avant-metal style that works nicely with the wild bass. Two different drummers are involved: Christof Hehn plays on three tracks and Ivo Matoš on two — the download includes a bonus track which is not credited, but it seems to be solo bass without drums or guitar. The general theme revolves around how foolish humans are, acting in ways that turn us into animals (my interpretation), with such titles as “Apes Don't Smoke Cigars - Just Pipes,” “Peeping-Bear's Exegesis of Not Peeping,” and “Ziggy the Unpigcorn.” “Peeping-Bear” is one of the standouts, with a tricky 7/4 middle section. Bottom line is that HumANIMALization is 23 minutes of big fun if you like this kind of thing.
