Oh the things you find when you clean house. Whilst rummaging through the EMI closets, these tapes we uncovered. So Mr. Hawkwind, Dave Brock, and engineer Paul Cobbold sat down and went through them. The performance is from the March 21, 1974 show in Chicago. It’s the pre-Warrior on the Edge of Time tour. For starters the sound quality is excellent, a tad clearer than Space Ritual (original version). Sadly for me this is the "no Simon House" tour, as he was unable to obtain a work permit in time to play with the band. His contributions are minimal, and certainly no violin. Bummer. That known, what do you get? A fairly decent set of tunes, highlighted by Turner's "D-Rider" and a nice, lengthy "It’s So Easy." This tour gives us the new resident poet, Michael Moorcock. He fits perfectly, his voice not that different from Calvert’s. Also on this tour is the one and only Lemmy. Of the 16 tracks, only six were performed on Space Ritual. "Brainbox Pollution," "The Watcher," "Psychedelic Warlords," "Paradox," and more make this a tasty slice of vintage Hawkwind. EMI has again given us a great album with superior packaging; classic Hawkwind graphics, a small poster with some weird astrological information, and some nice photos. It’s all packed in a box (which gets to be a hassle after a while). It’s a most welcome addition to your Hawkwind collection.
