Chaos Rocks is the 2024 entry into the ongoing saga of Alan Davey’s Hawkestrel project. It is of course an all-star affair with lots of guest contributors. Looking back at my review of Pioneers of Space (2020), I find the following, which applies to this one as well:

Regardless of the personnel on any given track, the music is solidly in the expected idiom, with insistent riffs, trippy synths, washes of Mellotron or string synth, and lyrics on futuristic topics. It’s a solid entry in the field, and while it doesn’t break any new ground, it’s consistently entertaining and should please fans of the genre.

Some highlights include Bob Calvert’s vocals on “Evil Rock,” Simon House’s violin on “Walking the Wheel,” Helios Creed’s wah-wah lead guitar on “Kinnikinnick Special,” and William Shatner’s vocals on a new version of Hawkwind’s classic “Silver Machine.” The title track is a fun instrumental workout with great drumming from Nico Leophonte, Mick Slattery on guitar, House on violin, Nik Turner on sax, and Davey handling bass and effects. And “Silver Machine” isn’t the only Hawkwind cover on the album — the CD includes bonus tracks of “Opa-Loka” and “Dangerous Vision” (here listed as “Dangerous Visions”) along with the Alien Sex Fiend song “Now I’m Feeling Zombified.” So get your space on, and check out Chaos Rocks.
