The Garden of Earthly Delights / You Can Never Come Down Cover art

The United States of America was a one-and-done experimental rock band founded in Los Angeles in 1967 by composer Joseph Byrd and vocalist Dorothy Moskowitz. Their one 1968 self-titled album, often cited as an early showcase for the use of electronic devices in rock music, was met with critical acclaim and minor chart success. Fast forward 56 years and Hanford Flyover, as their foray into cover tunes, decided that it would be fun to cover two of the songs from this unique band: “The Garden of Earthly Delights” and “You Can Never Come Down.” They loved how The United States of America went about creating music using tape loops, overdubs, and early forms of synthesizers. In homage, they took the same approach and created near perfect clones of these two songs, but a touch freakier than the originals. In fact Holly Bowler sounds remarkably like Dorothy Moskowitz on both songs. On “The Garden of Earthly Delights” Hanford Flyover adds a pulsating organ that enhances the song, and on “You Can Never Come Down” they rock out hard. They originally sent me a link to their Bandcamp page stating that they are planning to release these two songs as single in October 2024. But now Fruits de Mer has released it as a 7-inch vinyl single, so not sure if there are other plans to release these two covers. So head on over to Fruits de Mer to snap up this excellent little slab of vinyl with some excellent 60s recreations.
