Falter Bramnk — Reflux
(Bandcamp Snowdonia no#, 2000, CD)
by Peter Thelen, Published 2001-03-01
Here is a release that would be right at home on Musea’s new music label Gazul, bearing all of the traits of other artists on that label: unpredictability, hyper-diversity, and a fun and explorative attitude with experimental and avant-garde tendencies, without going too far into the serious or academic realm. Faltter Bramnk is French composer and multi-instrumentalist Frank Lambert, and with the exception of guest alto sax on a few tracks, he has composed and produced all of the tracks on this disc himself. Instrumentation included bass, keyboards, guitars, drums, odd percussive sounds, programs, samples, and studio treatment. His modus operandi generally begins with a somewhat simple riff as a framework, adding fragmented solos, studio wizardry, and bizarre destructive effects to produce a resultant chaotic sound that’s quite removed from its understructure, and masterful in execution. Under the surface it’s pretty much all over the map stylistically, within the confines of a chamber / rock or rock perspective, but every piece is ultimately exploded into a full blown sonic laboratory adventure. A few tracks have vocals, sometimes sung, whispered or shouted, but the disc is predominantly instrumental fare. Those looking for something challenging and adventurous within a generally accessible construct might do well to give this one a spin. Recommended.
