Evolución — Secretos
(Mylodon MyloCD125, 2007/2021, CD)

Evolución is a Chilean band that has been around since the early 80s, though their recorded output is sparse; Secretos is a live album recorded in 2006-2007 and released in 2021, though it’s only recently arrived in our inbox here. While I can’t fault the players for their technique, the music is instrumental fusion-oriented rock somewhat on the generic side. The guitar has a tone similar to any number of other flashy players, and there are plenty of solos filled with lots of notes. Likewise the keyboards, which are dextrous but horribly generic, sticking with stock preset sounds that don’t vary much from track to track. The slower tunes flirt with bland fuzak, and the faster ones go through all the moves you expect in the style. After listening through it twice in a row, not a single one of the thirteen tracks has left an impression in my mind. With better material and more variety in tones, this could be a good band, but Secretos is an exercise in… I don’t know what it’s an exercise in, but it just seems unnecessary. Your mileage may vary, of course, but I would take a pass if I could.
