I’m not sure why it took so long for Espresso’s self-titled debut album to reach my desk, but here it is, and it’s worth noting even four years after it came out. The group was founded in Quillota, Chile in 2015, and they released this album in 2022. It’s a solidly entertaining set of prog-fusion tunes that refuse to definitively settle on either the rock or jazz side of the fence — OK, maybe they are more rock than jazz, but when the music is good, you shouldn’t quibble over labels. The musicians responsible for this are Pierino Madrid Pruzzo (bass), Fernando Meneses Díaz (guitar), Elías Orellana Gómez (drums), and Wilfredo Salas González (keyboards). All are skilled players, but what they create when together is really outstanding. There are passages of tight ensemble playing, spacier sections where atmospheres are the focus, and odd rhythmic shifts that seem like the band is falling apart when they’re only transitioning to something else. And there are some really tasty heavy riffs that will have you wanting to toss your hair (if you have any). Espresso does a really good job of balancing technical prowess with good melodies and dramatic dynamics, so you never feel like they’re just showing off their chops. Excellent stuff, and highly recommended!
