Erik Wøllo — Guitar Nova
(Spotted Peccary SPM-1201, 2000, CD)

Guitar Nova Cover art

This is Wøllo’s latest, essentially an acoustic guitar driven album with a number of other instruments featured judiciously, track depending, and with the exception of the solo guitar on one track, everything is played by the man himself. Always full of surprises, this one is neither like his first album nor the releases he did on the Eurock label. Some parts of this wonderful journey are more kinetic and moving (like “Road,” “Hjallepallo,” and “Source”), while other numbers are a bit more introspective, but all very much alive, positive, and spirited. Additional instrumentation includes kora, slide, balalaika, and acoustic bass. And one could almost swear he’s playing an electric git on some of these. Many of the pieces find an acoustic groove that lies somewhere between a jazz and classical base, with hints of blues and other styles mixed in, but more than anything this unique music is Wøllo’s own creation. Very nice stuff, great music for a hike in the forest on a spring morning.
