The 1970 album Heavy Petting by the Irish group Dr. Strangely Strange is a fascinating study in the unexpected quirks and transitions of a band in flux. As the group moved from Dublin to London, Heavy Petting showcases a playful blend of Irish whimsy with electric soundscapes, reflecting the band's experimentation and growth. Unfortunately, the move to London was the end of the band until the late 90s. The 55th anniversary edition, in particular, offers a treasure trove of unexpected delights. It includes out-takes, radio sessions, and previously unreleased live recordings, providing listeners with a unique glimpse into the band's creative process and the evolution of their sound. The album's tracks are a testament to the band's willingness to push boundaries and embrace the quirky, making it a standout piece for those who appreciate the unconventional and the unexpected in music. To put Dr. Strangely Strange into context for those unfamiliar with the band, I would characterize them as an unconventional and stranger cousin of the Incredible String Band. Similar instrumentation and compositions, but to illustrate the unexpected, the Gloria refrain from “Ding Dong Merrily on High” appears at the end of both “Jove Was at Home” and “Goodnight My Friends,” though neither of them are Christmas songs, but somehow it works. The remastered original album and outtakes sound great, but the live tracks suffer from the poor recording equipment of early 70s. This reissue is sure to please the Strangely fans.
