Djam Karet — Still No Commercial Potential
(HC Productions HC 009, 1998, CD)

Still No Commercial Potential Cover art

A long time ago, when Djam Karet was essentially a new band, they released a three-song cassette of purely improvisational work titled No Commercial Potential. In the ensuing twelve years the band has grown in many ways, releasing a number of ‘composed’ works like Reflections from the Firepool, Suspension and Displacement, Burning the Hard City, and their latest from ‘97, The Devouring. With the success of the latter, it seemed like a fitting time for the band to revisit their original spirit and purpose of making music of a purely improvisational nature. Hence, the band has recorded and released (in a limited edition of 750) this full length CD of wholly improvised material, six pieces in all ranging from seven minutes to nearly half an hour, featuring the full four-piece version of the band: two guitars, bass, and drums (and maybe a little organ here or there). Folks who enjoy the band’s epic works (Like “The Devouring”) are certain to enjoy the material herein, with the same hard driving energized rock approach, the same spirited soloing, the iconoclastic cycles of building tension and flowing release, with perhaps a bit more of an instantaneous and adventurous spirit. The fire and the savvy of fourteen years of playing together is written between every note on this disc. Recommended!
