Djam Karet — Reflections from the Firepool
(HC Productions HC 004, 1989, CD)

Reflections from the Firepool Cover art

Cuneiform continues their recent parade through the Djam Karet back catalog with the release of the landmark Reflections from the Firepool. It's worth noting that this release differs from the original only in the artwork and packaging — the music itself has not been remastered or retouched in any way. Reflections... has always been a very important album in Djam Karet's history because it was here that they first truly defined themselves and birthed a style of music that allowed heavy guitar-crunching rock to meld seamlessly with experimental electronics and tape effects. From the opening guitar buzzsaw in "The Sky Opens Twice" to the bizarre delayed acoustic guitars, trains, and screeching microphone stands that wind out the title track, this music represents everything that is wholly original about Djam Karet. Arguably the most important American band of the last decade, and certainly the most unique, this album's ability to hold up so well over time is further evidence that these are no mere musicians performing notes on page but rather four gifted visionaries carving marvelous sound sculptures out of mountains. If you haven't yet had a chance to explore Djam Karet, there has been no better time or place to do so than with this reissue. Enjoy!
