David Helpling — Sleeping on the Edge of the World
(Spotted Peccary SPM-0802, 1999, CD)

by Paul Hightower, Published 2000-05-01

Sleeping on the Edge of the World Cover art

On Sleeping on the Edge of the World, synthesist David Helpling has conjured up 11 portraits of the subconscious, a soundtrack to your dreams if you will. This collection sits well beside the many Spotted Peccary artists who deal in ambient atmospherics, though Helpling’s work is imbued with a deeper sense of mystery and uncertainty than the others I’ve heard. And while a track like “All Things End” might stick more to a minimalist approach and “Deeper Still” displays more melody and structure, all the tracks inhabit deeply impressionistic ambient territory. Besides the many dreamy shades of synths, the other instruments inhabiting these pieces include dripping piano, gentle guitar, and a variety of percussion. And while the synths and piano provide most of the sonic texture, all of the instruments are imbued with a thick, atmospheric treatment that blend together much like the enigmatic imagery of Greg Klamt’s liner artwork. All in all it’s a fine collection and another example of why Spotted Peccary is the place to go for some of the best in modern ambient electronic music. Highly recommended.
