Danza de la Ira is a Chilean band that combines elements of hard rock, symphonic rock and a touch of metal, with a sound comparable to some of the better Italian bands of the 70s, and although they’ve been playing together since 2017, Septies Kairos (2024) is their first album release. A six-piece, they are blessed with an outstanding lead singer in José Pablo Silva Castro. Other members include bassist and lyricist Paolo Mutis, keyboardist and backing singer Felipe Castillo, who is also the primary composer and de-facto bandleader, guitarist and backing singer Rene Bonnemaison, guitarist Gonzalo Venegas, and drummer Felipe Bonnemaison; in addition two more guitarists (Cristobal Arroyo and Fabian Villagra) are featured, track depending. On all but one of the seven tracks included here, the band delivers the lyrics in their native Spanish, the other being an instrumental. All of the pieces have a strong progressive rock sensibility with powerful dynamic changes amid a constant maelstrom of shifting, well executed ideas. Opener “Arquero Silente” illustrates all that’s great about this band following an extended one-minute instrumental intro, the fierce vocals and amazing keyboard solos, in addition to that ever-evolving power delivered by the guitarists and rhythm section. With an even more powerful instrumental attack, “Impulso Distante” shows the group firing on all cylinders in a hard-rocking progressive mode moving to an atmospheric Floydian-like center section, and the harmonized vocal section that follows it gives the song a unique character, and at eight minutes, it’s one of the longer pieces here; only the closing epic “Tras el Despertar” clocks in at almost a minute longer, a slower intro that features great lead and harmony vocals and some excellent guitar solos as it proceeds, then bursts a ripping instrumental section mid-song. I would be remiss not to mention the excellent three-minute instrumental “Kairos,” a brisk and energetic number that features a little bit of everything great about these guys. Looking forward to what their second album brings.
