When vinyl was all the rage and before CDs took possession, it was not uncommon to encounter split LPs with the band on the A Side being different from the band on the B Side. With the renewed interest in vinyl we are now seeing an uptick in split LPs. Case in point is the new Kasumuen Records split LP with Japan's Buddhadatta on Side A and Melbourne, Australia's Paul Kidney Experience on Side B. The two bands meet and played together in March 2023 during Buddhdatta's debut Australian tour, and from that chance meeting a relationship developed, resulting in this release. This album is one wild and crazy set of music. Buddhadatta likes to think of themselves as Buddha-punk, whatever that means. Their music is both harsh and melodic, if that makes sense. Lots of guttural throat-rending vocals, drones, chanting, dissonant guitars, and high energy is their signature sound. It does take a bit to assimilate their music and to my brain and ears, their music shines on “Immortal Power” and “Buddha Bird.” On the flip side are three tracks by the Paul Kidney Experience: “Rhyxali” with washes of noise, scraping guitars, and low chanting choral voices that seems to be waiting for something that never quite happens, “The Move About Is All We Do” with odd percussion and throbbing bass that builds to a wild tribal abandon that just stops without any warning, and “Fool Moon Fever” that starts off with a repeated guitar riff and temple bells, and then adds layer upon layer of sonic textures that builds to a chaotic wall of sound. Definitely not for the faint of heart. I can sense the affinity these two bands feel for one another. However I do prefer the Buddhadatta side of the LP — I found their music much more engaging.
