Brinsley Schwarz — Shouting at the Moon
(Fretsore Records, 2025, CD / LP / DL)
by Henry Schneider, Published 2026-03-15
Brinsley Schwarz, the band, named after the founder, was a 70s English pub rock band known for members Schwarz and Nick Lowe. They flourished for a few years, and disbanded in 1975. Brinsley Schwarz, the multi-instrumentalist musician, has a long career performing with Ducks Deluxe and The Rumour, recorded and produced with Colin Scot, Ernie Graham, Frankie Miller, Al Stewart, Dr. Feelgood, The Kursaal Flyers, Dave Edmunds, Carlene Carter, Nick Lowe, Desmond Dekker, Garland Jeffreys, Any Trouble, Duncan Dhu, Rachel Sweet, Man, and Mikel Erentxun. Brinsley eventually recorded a solo album, Unexpected in 2016, followed by Tangled in 2021, and at 78 years old, his musical trilogy is complete with the 2025 album Shouting at the Moon. Some of the songs were written between the late 90s and early 2005 (“The Chance,” “Nothing Is What It Seems,” and “What in the World”) and “Hard to Change” and “It’s Been a Long Year” written between 2024 and 2025. Some of the songs were written for his first solo album, but he had too much material that go around. He does pay tribute to his long time friend Graham Parker by covering Parker’s “Watch the Moon Come Down.” Shouting at the Moon is a soulful album of gentle rock ballads and Brinsley’s mellow vocals. There are some interesting spots like “Falling Over Backwards” with a Brian Auger vibe on the Hammond organ, as well as late night urban saxophone peppered throughout the album, and some funky grooves. It is great to see a 70s musician still churning out some great music.
