Billy Yfantis — Noises from the Outer Space

Noises from the Outer Space Cover art

Following on from Entering the Solar System (2020), Greek electronic artist Billy Yfantis reaches once again beyond the bounds of our planet with Noises from the Outer Space, a collection of six sound-sculptures in the neighborhood of ten and a half minutes each. These abstract pieces feature almost nothing that could be conventionally termed notes, instead presenting slow fluxes of loosely pitched tones wandering in and out of the soundscape. Sometimes there are indistinct low rumbles, sometimes eerie whistling like wind swirling around bizarre rock formations. It would be the perfect soundtrack for a lonely craft moving through the depths of space, with the stars, nebulae, and other celestial objects represented by individual sounds as they pass by in the depths. Certainly this is not music to grab the listener’s attention, though the complexity of the waveforms can reward close listening. At times, it’s almost like the Ligeti choral music used in 2001: A Space Odyssey played at one-eighth speed. Given the slowly evolving pace, nothing is ever abrasive or grating in spite of the atonal nature of the sounds, and there’s a weird kind of peace that accompanies the album if you let it. Sonic adventurers take note: Take your protein pills, put your helmet on, and relax for a sonic meditation on the void between solar systems.
