The True Story of Bananagun Cover art

To paraphrase Mae West, "Is that a bananagun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" Either way, Bananagun is sure to put a smile on your face. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, the oddly named Bananagun draws their inspiration from the 60s and 70s pop psych, Afrobeat, and exotica. And a lyric from the opening track, “Bang Go the Bongos,” kind of sums up their music “There is nothing special about me / Just another apple on the tree.” Their debut album, The True Story of Bananagun, grows on you over time, especially their interesting psych pop funk tunes: “The Master,” “People Talk Too Much,” and “Freak Machine.” They lock into a groove and jam, even if for only three or four minutes. If you don’t like the psych funk, then there are a couple of smooth 60s Euro-pop songs, or the bubblegum tune “She Now,” or the abstract “Bird Up!” that may strike your fancy. Bananagun are not revivalists, they merely reference the past and take it a giant leap forward. If you are in the mood for fun music with a freshness and playful spontaneity, check out The True Story of Bananagun.
