Heartslaughter Cover art

Back in 2019 David Costanza of Art of Flying sent me their album Escort Mission, which I reviewed and Exposé published in 2020. In November 2024 he found the review and sent me their latest album, heartslaughter, a mixed bag of eleven dream-pop tunes, minimal acoustic guitar explorations, and some edgy psych and cyberpunk stylings. The album opens with “We Drank the Good Shit” with an a cappella Greek Chorus alternating with David’s vocals for an interesting listening experience. Art of Flying is definitely following their own muse here and throughout the album. There four tracks with titles starting “Song for…” (“Song for Sparrow,” “Song for Frank,” “Song for Crow,” and “Song for Sam”). These four tracks feature different experimental approaches, atmospheric choruses, acoustic guitar noodling, and dreamy duets. I find “Now That the Spell Is Broken,” “Solitude Song,” “Simone,” and “When We’re Flying Home” to be particularly creative and interesting songs. And I detect a bit of a Laurie Anderson influence on “When We’re Flying Home.” Another interesting song is “Peace / Remedy (End of Mankind Blues),” a dark and haunting song with an ethereal trumpet joining the mix towards the end of the song. If you are a fan of artistic, otherworldly, soothing music you may find heartslaughter to be of your liking.
