Arcana — Cantar de Procella
(Bandcamp Cold Meat Industry CMI.55, 1997, CD / DL)

Cantar de Procella Cover art

Cold rock, biting wind. Hooded figures traveling through dark caverns by torchlight. These are the images that come to mind as you listen to "The Opening of the Wound," the other kind of chanting. Not of light, but of darkness. Then the overall beauty of this album grows on you. Arcana is Peter Pettersson with Ida Bengtsson on vocals. It’s another fine product of Sweden. Cantar de Procella is Arcana's second release, and a very Medieval one, placing it in the "Gothic" section. The songs consist of Peter and Ida, accapella or with various MIDI'd period strings, keyboards, and drum sounds, using computers to create something very old sounding. I guess this album lies somewhere between Dead Can Dance and Chant! It's not "world" music, it's true gothic style chamber music. The title track is really cool, with dual vocals, harpsichord, and strings. Gorgeous. This nice little digipak also comes with a poster inside it, a photo of the couple in the woods wearing their Renaissance Faire finest.
